    Summary

    Reducing endotoxin in pertussis vaccine can minimize side effects. This study purified the vaccine, lowering endotoxin by 1000-fold, with protective effect assays ongoing.

    Background:

    • Standard pertussis vaccines are associated with side effects attributed to endotoxin content.

    • To reduce the endotoxin content of the standard pertussis vaccine.
    • To investigate a method for purifying pertussis vaccine to improve its safety profile.

    • Polymyxin-Sepharose affinity chromatography was employed to remove endotoxins.
    • The endotoxin levels in the vaccine were quantified before and after purification.
