Summary

Oral microscope decontamination effectively removes implant residues. Higher magnifications (8× and 12.8×) significantly reduced residues compared to 1× magnification, with most remaining below the implant threads.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Surgical Technology

Background:

  • Peri-implantitis is a common complication leading to implant failure.
  • Effective decontamination of implant surfaces is crucial for re-osseointegration and treatment success.
  • Current decontamination methods may leave residual contaminants, impacting outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of oral microscope-assisted decontamination of explanted implant surfaces in vitro.
  • To compare decontamination effectiveness at different magnification levels (1×, 8×, 12.8×).
  • To analyze the influence of thread pitch and location on residual contaminants.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve explanted implants with severe peri-implantitis were subjected to decontamination.

  • Methods included curetting, ultrasound, titanium brushing, and sandblasting.
  • Decontamination was performed under 1×, 8×, or 12.8× magnification, followed by residue analysis.
  • Main Results:

    • Higher magnifications (8× and 12.8×) significantly reduced implant surface residues compared to 1× magnification (P<0.0001).
    • Residues were primarily concentrated below the implant threads, irrespective of thread pitch (P>0.05).
    • All tested decontamination methods showed improved results at higher magnifications across different implant areas.

    Conclusions:

    • Oral microscopy-assisted decontamination is an effective method for removing residues from contaminated implant surfaces.
    • Higher magnification levels enhance the removal of contaminants during the decontamination process.
    • Residual contaminants after decontamination are mainly located below the implant threads, with thread pitch having no significant impact.
