    Summary

    Immune responses to mitogens were altered in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, with reduced responses to purified protein derivative (PPD) and allogeneic cells observed. These immune alterations in MS may be influenced by HLA-Dw2 status.

    Background:

    • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.
    • The immune system's role in MS pathogenesis is complex and not fully understood.
    • Investigating in vitro immune responses can provide insights into immune dysregulation in MS.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare in vitro lymphocyte proliferation between patients with definite MS and healthy controls.
    • To assess responses to various immune stimuli, including mitogens and antigens.
    • To explore the influence of HLA-Dw2 status on immune responses in MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured in vitro lymphocyte proliferation in 67 MS patients and 67 matched controls.
