    Summary

Disc haemorrhages and vitreous opacities are more common in chronic glaucoma patients. Consider glaucoma if disc haemorrhage occurs with symptomatic vitreous detachment, even without other signs.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Chronic glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
    • Disc haemorrhages and vitreous opacities are potential indicators in glaucoma diagnosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of disc haemorrhages and prepapillary vitreous opacities in chronic glaucoma patients.
    • To assess the association between symptomatic vitreous detachment and chronic glaucoma.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of existing data from population surveys.
    • Review of clinical records of glaucoma patients from a specific district.

    Main Results:

    • Confirmed a high prevalence of disc haemorrhages in chronic glaucoma.
    • Supported the hypothesis that prepapillary vitreous opacities are more frequent in glaucoma patients.
    • Found symptomatic vitreous detachment in 5 of 12 self-selected chronic glaucoma patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Disc haemorrhages and vitreous opacities are significant indicators in chronic glaucoma.
    • Symptomatic vitreous detachment, especially with disc haemorrhage, warrants serious consideration for early glaucoma detection.
