Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics
  • Cephalometric analysis
  • Predictive modeling

Background:

  • Accurate prediction of posttreatment outcomes is crucial for determining optimal orthodontic therapy.
  • The predictive accuracy of software in class III cases remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prediction accuracy of Dolphin® software for soft tissue changes in non-orthognathic orthodontic class III adult patients.
  • To assess the reliability of specific facial landmarks and parameters in predicted outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of lateral cephalometric radiographs from 28 class III adult patients.
  • Utilized Dolphin® Imaging software to generate predicted posttreatment outcomes.
  • Compared predicted outcomes with actual posttreatment radiographs for soft tissue parameters and landmarks.

Main Results:

  • Dolphin® software demonstrated significant differences between predicted and actual outcomes for nasal prominence, lower lip to H line, and lower lip to E line.
  • Point Subnasale (Sn) and Soft Tissue A (ST A) were the most accurate landmarks, with high horizontal and vertical prediction accuracy.
  • Predictions in the vertical direction were generally more accurate than in the horizontal direction, except for the chin region, which showed relative inaccuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Dolphin® software provides acceptable prediction accuracy for midfacial soft tissue changes in class III orthodontic patients.
  • Limitations exist in predicting changes related to chin and lower lip prominence.
  • Accurate software predictions can enhance physician-patient communication and guide clinical treatment decisions.
