    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Acute necrotizing amebic colitis is a rare but severe intestinal condition.
    • High mortality rates are associated with this disease, even with prompt diagnosis and treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report on six cases of acute necrotizing amebic colitis.
    • To highlight the challenges in preoperative diagnosis and the impact of early antiamebic therapy on patient outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective case series analysis of six patients with acute necrotizing amebic colitis.
    • Surgical intervention details and postoperative outcomes were reviewed.
    • Histologic examination of surgical specimens confirmed the diagnosis in all cases.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • None of the six patients were diagnosed preoperatively.
    • Five patients presented with severely necrotic and gangrenous colons requiring extensive surgical resection (subtotal colectomy or hemicolectomy).
    • Five out of six patients died within four weeks post-surgery; the sole survivor received preoperative metronidazole.

    Conclusions:

    • Preoperative diagnosis of acute necrotizing amebic colitis is crucial for effective management.
    • Early initiation of antiamebic therapy, such as metronidazole, alongside surgical intervention may reduce the high mortality associated with this condition.
