Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.4K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

394
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.8K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

39.1K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Deindividuation00:57

Deindividuation

26.5K
Deindividuation is a form of social influence on an individual’s behavior such that the individual engages in unusual or non-normal behavior while in a group setting. Why? Because in these group settings, the individual no longer sees themselves as an individual anymore, disinhibiting their behavior and personal restraint.

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

191
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Summary

The Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) shows good validity in Spanish adults. The 9-item and 8-item BSCS versions are reliable and suitable for mental health assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) is widely used globally.
  • Research on the Spanish version of the BSCS is limited, particularly in adult populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide validity evidence for the Spanish version of the BSCS in adults.
  • To analyze and compare psychometric properties of different BSCS versions (13, 10, 9, 8, and 7 items).

Main Methods:

  • Confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate one-factor and two-factor models.
  • The study included a sample of 676 Spanish adults.
  • Psychometric properties, including internal structure, invariance across gender, reliability, and validity, were assessed.

Main Results:

  • The 9-item, 8-item, and 7-item BSCS versions demonstrated adequate fit for a two-factor structure.
  • The 9-item and 8-item BSCS versions showed invariance across gender.
  • Reliability and item homogeneity were satisfactory for the 9-item and 8-item BSCS versions.
  • Scores on the 9-item and 8-item BSCS correlated significantly with measures of psychological adjustment and wellbeing (life satisfaction, flourishing, self-esteem, distress, depression, loneliness).

Conclusions:

  • The 9-item and 8-item BSCS versions offer robust psychometric properties for use with Spanish adults.
  • These validated BSCS versions are suitable for mental health assessment contexts, contributing to the understanding of self-control in Spanish-speaking populations.
