This study introduces a validated scale for measuring four forms of organizational support (PCMT model). Findings show these support types differentially predict job burnout and impact home life.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Organizational Behavior
- Workplace Well-being
Background:
- Organizational support is crucial for employee well-being.
- Existing models may not fully capture the nuances of organizational support.
- The PCMT model proposes four distinct forms of organizational support.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a psychometrically reliable scale for measuring the four forms of organizational support within the PCMT model.
- To advance theoretical understanding of organizational support and its impact.
Main Methods:
- Six studies involving 1,853 participants.
- Content validation, factor analysis, reliability, and measurement invariance testing.
- Scale validation through discriminant, convergent, and predictive validity assessments.
- Field deployment of the 24-item scale.
Main Results:
- A validated 24-item scale measuring four forms of organizational support was developed.
- The four forms of organizational support differentially predict dimensions of job burnout.
- The effects of organizational support on burnout spill over into the home domain.
Conclusions:
- The validated scale provides a tool for measuring organizational support, fostering new research.
- Conceptual alignment between support type and well-being outcomes enhances predictive validity.
- Understanding distinct forms of organizational support is key to improving employee and family well-being.
