    Summary

    Trazodone hydrochloride (Desyrel) may improve daily living activities for stroke patients with depression. This antidepressant medication showed a trend toward greater functional improvement in stroke survivors experiencing depressive symptoms.

    Background:

    • Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability.
    • Depression is a common comorbidity following stroke, impacting recovery.
    • Existing treatments for post-stroke depression have variable efficacy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of trazodone hydrochloride in improving functional outcomes in stroke rehabilitation.
    • To investigate the effect of trazodone on activities of daily living (ADL) in post-stroke patients with depression.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 27 inpatients in a stroke rehabilitation program.
    • Participants received either trazodone hydrochloride (target dose 200 mg/d) or placebo.
    • Functional improvement was assessed using Barthel activities of daily living (ADL) scores.
