Site-Targeted Drug Delivery Systems: Polymeric Carriers

Polymeric carriers enhance targeted drug delivery by increasing efficacy while minimizing off-target effects. These carriers comprise a biodegradable polymeric backbone integrated with functional elements that enable targeting, improve physicochemical properties, and regulate drug release.Targeting MechanismsThe targeting ability of polymeric carriers is mediated by a homing device, which is a molecular recognition component designed to selectively bind to specific tissues or cells. Microbial Corrosion01:24

Microbial Corrosion

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is a significant form of material degradation caused by the metabolic activities of microorganisms. This phenomenon poses substantial challenges across various industries, including oil and gas, maritime, and water treatment sectors.MIC occurs when microorganisms, such as bacteria, archaea, and fungi, colonize metal surfaces, forming biofilms that alter the local electrochemical environment. These biofilms can lead to the production of corrosive...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Nanotechnology
  • Textile Engineering

Background:

  • Healthcare environments are prone to infections spread by multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB), with textiles like blankets acting as potential vectors.
  • Antimicrobial functionalization of healthcare textiles is crucial for reducing microbial load and preventing infection transmission.
  • Existing textiles in hospitals and nursing homes may not undergo adequate pre-cleaning, increasing cross-contamination risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and optimize antimicrobial properties for healthcare textiles using novel gold-hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (AuNPs-HAp).
  • To evaluate the efficacy and durability of AuNPs-HAp functionalized knitted fabrics against microbial contamination.
  • To identify optimal conditions for nanoparticle incorporation and assess the impact on textile properties.

Main Methods:

  • Knitted fabrics (cotton, polyester, cotton-polyester blends) were functionalized with AuNPs-HAp.
  • Various pre-treatments, surfactants, and incorporation processes were tested for optimal nanoparticle adhesion.
  • Exhaustion parameters (time, temperature) were optimized using Design of Experiments (DoE).
  • Antimicrobial efficacy and washing fastness (assessed by color difference, ΔE) were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • The optimal functionalization involved half bleached cotton (CO) treated with a specific surfactant combination (Imerol® Jet-B and Luprintol® Emulsifier PE New).
  • The optimized process utilized exhaustion at 70 °C for 10 minutes.
  • The functionalized CO fabric demonstrated significant antibacterial properties that persisted after 20 washing cycles.

Conclusions:

  • Functionalized healthcare textiles with AuNPs-HAp offer a viable strategy to combat MDRB and other infections in clinical settings.
  • The developed antimicrobial textile exhibits excellent durability and wash fastness, suitable for comfort textiles in healthcare.
  • This research presents a promising approach to enhance the safety and hygiene of frequently used textiles in hospitals and nursing homes.
