Virtual Work for a System of Connected Rigid Bodies

433
Virtual work is a powerful method used to solve problems involving several connected rigid bodies. When the system is in equilibrium, virtual work is zero. This allows the calculation of the resulting forces when a system undergoes a virtual displacement. When attempting to analyze such a system, first, use a free-body diagram, where an independent coordinate represents the configuration of the links, and mark its deflected position resulting from the positive virtual displacement.

Area of Science:

  • Robotics
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Automotive Engineering

Background:

  • Current autonomous driving development relies on simulations and public road testing, posing safety risks and high costs.
  • Existing methods involuntarily involve other road users in beta testing, which is inefficient and unsafe.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce and evaluate the Vehicle-in-Virtual-Environment (VVE) method for developing and testing connected and autonomous driving (CAD) functions.
  • Demonstrate a safer, more efficient, and cost-effective alternative to current CAD development practices.

Main Methods:

  • The VVE method places the actual autonomous vehicle in a virtual environment, replacing real sensor feeds with simulated data.
  • Rare and challenging scenarios are injected into the virtual environment for safe and thorough testing.
  • Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication for pedestrian safety is used as a case study, with experiments involving no-line-of-sight scenarios.

Main Results:

  • VVE enables safe testing of autonomous driving functions by simulating realistic sensor data within a virtual environment.
  • Experiments demonstrated that V2P communication effectively prevents collisions by sharing pedestrian location and heading information.
  • The VVE method allows for the safe integration of real pedestrians and vulnerable road users into testing scenarios.

Conclusions:

  • The VVE method provides a secure, efficient, and economical approach to developing and evaluating autonomous driving systems.
  • V2P communication is a viable strategy for enhancing pedestrian safety in autonomous driving applications.
  • The VVE framework significantly enhances the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicle testing.
