Bones of the Upper Limb: Ulna

2.3K
The ulna and radius are parallel bones of the antebrachium or the forearm. The ulna lies medially and consists of a bony tip called the olecranon process at its proximal end. This hook-like projection articulates with the olecranon fossa of the humerus and forms the "hinged" ulnohumeral part of the elbow joint. This joint facilitates forearm extension and flexion while preventing its hyperextension. Similarly, the coronoid process, another bony projection on the proximal/anterior side...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Pediatric Genetics
  • Skeletal Dysplasias

Background:

  • Ulnar longitudinal deficiency (ULD) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by incomplete formation of the ulna.
  • It often presents with upper limb abnormalities, including carpal and digital malformations.
  • While typically sporadic, genetic factors are being investigated.

Observation:

  • A rare case of ULD in an 11-month-old female infant is presented.
  • The infant exhibited congenital absence of the left ulna.
  • Associated anomalies included the absence of four digits and a hypoplastic postaxial finger.

Findings:

  • This case represents a severe manifestation of ULD.
  • The presentation in a female infant and on the left side is less common than typical male-predominant, right-sided cases.
  • Detailed physical examination and advanced imaging are critical for diagnosis.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the variability in ULD presentation.
  • Accurate diagnosis and classification are essential for appropriate management and genetic counseling.
  • Further research into ULD etiology and management strategies is warranted.
