  • To identify factors associated with successful academic promotion in family medicine.
  • To inform strategies for supporting faculty career advancement.

  • A survey was administered to family medicine department chairs by the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA).
  • The survey collected data on departmental promotion rates, promotion committees, faculty-chair meetings, mentorship, and meeting attendance.

Main Results:

  • Attendance at professional meetings correlated with higher assistant-to-associate professor promotions.
  • Departments with promotion committees showed higher promotion rates at both assistant-to-associate and associate-to-full professor levels.
  • Assigned mentorship, chair support, and faculty development sponsorship were not associated with promotion rates.

Conclusions:

  • Professional meeting attendance and departmental promotion committees appear beneficial for academic promotion.
  • Assigned mentorship was not found to be a significant factor in achieving promotion.
