Summary

Photogrammetry offers reliable intrarater and interrater measurements for lower limb flexibility, including key muscles like the iliopsoas and hamstrings. This technique provides excellent accuracy for assessing range of motion in healthy adults.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the intrarater and interrater reliability of photogrammetry for assessing lower limb flexibility.
  • To evaluate the accuracy of photogrammetric measurements for key lower limb muscles.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, cross-sectional observational study with a test-retest design was employed.
  • Thirty healthy, physically active adults participated, assessed by three novice raters.
  • Photogrammetric images were captured for iliopsoas, hamstring, quadriceps, and gastrocnemius flexibility tests, with reliability analyzed using ICC, SEM, and MDC.

Main Results:

  • Excellent intrarater reliability was observed for all assessed muscles (ICC > 0.96).
  • Interrater reliability was excellent for iliopsoas (ICC=0.94) and gastrocnemius (ICC=0.91), and good for hamstring (ICC=0.90) and quadriceps (ICC=0.85).
  • Standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change (MDC) values indicated high precision for intrarater assessments.

Conclusions:

  • Photogrammetry demonstrates excellent intrarater and good-to-excellent interrater reliability for assessing lower limb flexibility in novice raters.
  • Clinicians can utilize photogrammetry for reliable flexibility assessments, but should account for interrater variability when interpreting results.
