Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) revealed that cross-modal visual speech processing in the auditory cortex of pre-lingually deaf children with cochlear implants (CI) is linked to variable speech outcomes. Enhanced left inferior frontal gyrus activation may indicate effortful listening in CI users.
