Epidermal stem cells (EpiSCs) are mainly located at the basal layer of the epidermis. These cells repair minor injuries of the skin and replace dead skin cells. Summary

Integra®, an artificial skin substitute, successfully reconstructed a hand soft tissue defect after sarcoma removal. This dermal regeneration matrix facilitated healing and avoided extensive procedures, showing excellent recovery.

Background:

  • Soft tissue sarcomas of the hand present complex reconstructive challenges.
  • Traditional methods may involve significant donor-site morbidity.

Observation:

  • A 75-year-old female with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the right hand required extensive tumor resection.
  • Exposed bone and tendons necessitated advanced reconstructive techniques.

Findings:

  • Integra® dermal regeneration matrix was used for immediate coverage of the defect after tumor excision.
  • This facilitated subsequent split-thickness skin grafting and promoted complete wound healing.
  • No local recurrence or metastasis was observed at one-year follow-up.

Implications:

  • Integra® offers a viable reconstructive option for complex hand soft tissue defects post-sarcoma resection.
  • Its use can lead to favorable tissue regeneration, high patient satisfaction, and excellent functional recovery.
  • This approach potentially minimizes the need for more invasive reconstructive surgeries.
