Summary

Mobile apps can track snoring changes over time. In a small study, higher hypoglossal nerve stimulator (HNS) voltage correlated with decreased snoring frequency and intensity during therapy adjustments.

Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway collapse.
  • Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) is an emerging treatment for moderate-to-severe OSA.
  • Objective monitoring of treatment effects, like snoring, is crucial for patient management.

Observation:

  • Longitudinal snoring patterns were monitored using a smartphone application.
  • Data was collected during the up-titration phase of hypoglossal nerve stimulator therapy.
  • Six patients with OSA undergoing HNS therapy were included in this case series.

Findings:

  • Increasing stimulation voltage of the hypoglossal nerve stimulator was associated with a reduction in snoring.
  • Both the frequency and intensity of snoring events decreased as HNS voltage increased.
  • Mobile app-based snoring capture provided longitudinal data correlating with therapeutic changes.

Implications:

  • Mobile health technology offers a feasible method for tracking snoring in real-time.
  • Objective snoring reduction may serve as an indicator of effective hypoglossal nerve stimulator therapy.
