Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

575
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine02:50

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine

5.0K
Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

Nursing Ethical Principles II

1.0K
Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.
Initially, Mr. John's...

Cancer Therapies02:49

Cancer Therapies

7.8K
Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients.
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

402
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

3.4K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Summary

Patients with cancer use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for symptom relief. This study found that African American patients had the highest CAM use, influenced by cultural background, regardless of immigration status.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Patients with cancer often use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for symptom management and to find hope.
  • Factors influencing CAM use among cancer patients, particularly race, ethnicity, and immigration status, require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the influence of race, ethnic groups, and immigration status on the utilization of CAM by cancer patients.
  • To understand the patterns of CAM seeking behavior in a diverse patient population within a community cancer center.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective questionnaire study was conducted at a community cancer center in Brooklyn, New York City.
  • Data collected included demographics, cancer information, race/ethnicity, immigration duration, and psychosocial factors, correlated with CAM use.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of CAM use was 66.11% among 658 cancer patients.
  • Patients of African descent reported higher CAM use (72.73%) compared to White patients (63.53%).
  • Asian-born immigrants showed lower CAM use (53.77%) compared to US-born individuals (66.50%), while Latin-American born patients trended towards higher use (74.83%). Prayer and spirituality were the most common CAM subtypes.

Conclusions:

  • CAM use was most prevalent among African American patients in this cohort with a significant immigrant background.
  • CAM utilization in non-White patients was linked to their ethnic background, irrespective of their US-born status.
  • Cultural roots appear to be a significant determinant in the adoption of CAM therapies among cancer patients.
