    Summary

    Individuals with sickle cell trait maintain normal lung function, unlike those with sickle cell anemia. This study found no significant differences in diffusion capacity of the lung (DLco) or lung volumes between sickle cell trait subjects and healthy individuals.

    Background:

    • Sickle cell anemia is characterized by restrictive ventilatory patterns, reduced lung diffusion capacity (DLco), and lung volumes.
    • Previous studies suggest variable lung function outcomes in sickle cell trait.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare lung function, specifically diffusion capacity and lung volumes, in individuals with sickle cell trait versus healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study involving 13 subjects with sickle cell trait and 13 age, sex, height, and smoking-matched healthy controls.
    • Pulmonary function tests including diffusion capacity of the lung (DLco) and lung volumes were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in mean DLco or lung volumes between the sickle cell trait group and the healthy control group.
    • No consistent differences were found even when comparing age-matched individuals.

    Conclusions:

    • Sickle cell trait is associated with normal lung function, contrasting with the impaired lung function seen in sickle cell anemia.
    • The preservation of lung function in sickle cell trait may be attributed to a lower incidence of pulmonary infectious and infarctive episodes.
