Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS01:21

Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS

230
Pharmacological therapies for IBS-C are designed to alleviate abdominal discomfort and enhance bowel function. In patients with IBS-C, fiber supplements may help soften stools and decrease straining, but may also lead to increased gas production and bloating. Osmotic laxatives like milk of magnesia are frequently used to soften stools and increase stool frequency in IBS-C patients. In addition, two drugs approved for use in severe IBS-C adult cases are linaclotide (Linzess) and lubiprostone...

Assessment of the Rectum and Anus

283
Evaluating the rectum and anus plays a crucial role in conducting a thorough physical examination of the gastrointestinal system. Although it may be uncomfortable and often embarrassing for the patient, it holds immense diagnostic value, particularly in detecting gastrointestinal diseases and abnormalities. This guide will explain how to perform this assessment using inspection and palpation methods.
Rectal Inspection
Begin by inspecting the perianal and anal areas for color, texture, rashes,...

Drugs for Treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant IBS

218
Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a subtype of IBS characterized primarily by frequent, loose, or watery stools, abdominal pain, and abdominal discomfort. Therapeutic approaches to managing IBS-D include dietary changes, stress management techniques, and pharmaceutical interventions.
Two specific drugs used in the treatment are alosetron (Lotronex) and eluxadoline (Viberzi). Alosetron, a 5-HT3 antagonist, works by slowing the movement of stools in the gut, reducing bowel...

Chronic Bowel Disorders: Introduction

490
Chronic bowel diseases are a group of long-term conditions affecting the digestive tract, characterized by inflammation and damage to the gut lining. These conditions primarily include irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...

Drugs Affecting GI Tract Motility: Other Laxatives

285
Laxatives are primarily used to alleviate constipation, a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by infrequent bowel movements and difficulty passing stools. They work by various mechanisms to increase the volume or frequency of bowel movements. The primary modes of action of laxatives include increasing stool bulk, softening the stool, stimulating intestinal motility, and osmotically drawing water into the intestines.
Osmotic or saline laxatives, like magnesium hydroxide or milk of...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.
  • Constipation is a frequent non-motor symptom in MSA, impacting patient quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and clinical features of subjective constipation in Chinese patients with MSA.
  • To investigate the timing of constipation onset relative to motor symptom development in MSA.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 200 probable MSA patients in China (February 2016 - June 2021).
  • Data collected on demographics, constipation (ROME III criteria), motor, and non-motor symptoms (UMSARS).

Main Results:

  • Constipation prevalence was 53.5% in MSA, 59.7% in MSA-P, and 39.3% in MSA-C.
  • MSA-P subtype and higher UMSARS scores correlated with constipation.
  • 59.8% of constipated patients experienced symptoms before motor onset, with a longer preceding interval.

Conclusions:

  • Constipation is a highly prevalent early non-motor symptom in MSA.
  • Understanding constipation timing may aid early MSA pathogenesis research.
