Background:

Subjective judgments in face perception are crucial for social interactions.
The relationship between perceived attractiveness and trustworthiness is a key area of inquiry.
Previous research has not fully elucidated whether beauty and trustworthiness are perceived independently.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate whether people perceive attractiveness and trustworthiness as distinct qualities in faces.
To introduce and validate a card sorting game for use in field studies of face perception.
To test the hypothesis that liking and trust judgments differ.

Main Methods:

A card sorting game was developed for field studies.
Participants sorted 27 semi-artificial portraits under two conditions: 'like' (attractiveness) and 'trust'.
Faces were presented as prototypes and individualized prototypes; judgments were analyzed using Correspondence Analysis.

Main Results:

Participant judgments were highly consistent within each condition.
A significant difference was observed between judgments of liking and trust.
Participants reported reacting to subtle facial expression inconsistencies in the trust condition.

Conclusions:

Liking (attractiveness) and trustworthiness are distinct perceptual judgments.
The card sorting game is a viable tool for studying face perception in real-world settings.
Facial features, particularly expressions, play a role in trustworthiness judgments.
