Background:

  • Oxytocin (OXT) is an anorexigenic hormone with bone anabolic properties.
  • OXT administration increases lean mass (LM) in adults with sarcopenic obesity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate associations between OXT, body composition, and bone health in adolescents and young adults with severe obesity undergoing sleeve gastrectomy (SG).
  • To compare changes in OXT levels and body composition between SG patients and non-surgical controls over 12 months.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 25 youth (13-25 years) with severe obesity undergoing SG and 27 non-surgical controls.
  • Fasting serum OXT levels and DXA scans for areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and body composition were assessed at baseline and 12 months.
  • Statistical analysis to determine associations between OXT, BMI, LM, fat mass (FM), and aBMD.

Main Results:

  • SG patients had higher baseline BMI but similar OXT levels compared to controls.

  • Sleeve gastrectomy is associated with decreased OXT levels and significant reductions in lean mass.
  • OXT pathways represent a potential therapeutic target to mitigate lean mass loss after bariatric surgery.
  • Further research is needed to explore OXT's role in preserving muscle mass and function post-SG.
