    Summary

    Intravenous dichlorvos (DDVP) caused severe respiratory distress and lung function changes in calves. Atropine treatment promptly reversed most effects, demonstrating its efficacy in treating DDVP toxicosis.

    Background:

    • Dichlorvos (2,2-dichlorvinyldimethyl phosphate) (DDVP) is an organophosphate pesticide.
    • Organophosphate toxicosis can lead to significant clinical and physiological derangements.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the clinical and pulmonary function changes induced by intravenous DDVP toxicosis in calves.
    • To evaluate the reversibility of these changes following atropine treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • Six Friesian calves (1-3 months old) were administered intravenous DDVP.
    • Clinical signs, respiratory distress, and pulmonary function parameters were monitored.
    • Cholinesterase inhibition and arterial blood gases were assessed.
    • The effects of atropine treatment on these parameters were evaluated.

    Main Results:

    • DDVP administration induced severe respiratory distress, excitation, weakness, muscle fasciculations, and cholinesterase inhibition within one minute.
    • Significant decreases in dynamic lung compliance and arterial oxygen tension were observed.
    • Significant increases in total pulmonary resistance, viscous work of breathing, and alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient were noted.
    • Body secretions, heart rate, respiratory rate, tidal volume, and arterial carbon dioxide tension were not significantly affected.
    • Atropine promptly and completely reversed most DDVP-induced changes, with muscle fasciculations, central depression, and cholinesterase inhibition resolving progressively within 24 hours.

    Conclusions:

    • Intravenous DDVP causes acute, severe respiratory and pulmonary dysfunction in young calves.
    • Atropine is an effective antidote for reversing the acute clinical and pulmonary effects of DDVP toxicosis.
    • While atropine rapidly resolves many symptoms, some neurological and biochemical effects persist for a longer duration.
