Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if object shape alone can trigger associated color knowledge.
  • To determine the neural timing of color association retrieval compared to actual color perception.

Main Methods:

  • Used frequency-tagged electroencephalogram (EEG) to record brain responses.
  • Presented periodic sequences of objects with known color associations (yellow, green) among non-periodic distractors.
  • Tested both colored and grayscale versions of familiar objects.

Main Results:

  • Grayscale objects automatically elicited neural responses specific to their associated color (e.g., yellow-specific responses for yellow duck shapes).
  • These shape-driven color associations were detected very early (before 100 ms).
