A rare case of ventricular arrhythmia during kyphoplasty was caused by cardiac cement embolism. Surgical removal of the embolus resolved the arrhythmia, highlighting a unique complication of the procedure.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Interventional Radiology
- Cardiac Surgery
Background:
- Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to treat vertebral compression fractures.
- Ventricular arrhythmias can have various causes, including procedural complications.
- Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle.
Observation:
- A 52-year-old woman developed complex ventricular arrhythmia during kyphoplasty for a lumbar osteoporotic fracture.
- Initial assessments ruled out procedure-related causes and suggested possible underlying cardiomyopathy.
- An intracardiac cement embolism was diagnosed as the cause of the arrhythmia.
Findings:
- The patient underwent successful open-heart surgery for removal of the cardiac cement embolus.
- No new arrhythmias were recorded during the follow-up period.
- This represents the first reported case of ventricular arrhythmogenic presentation of cardiac cement embolism after kyphoplasty.
Implications:
- Cardiac cement embolism is a rare but serious complication of kyphoplasty that can manifest as ventricular arrhythmia.
- Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for managing this complication.
- This case underscores the importance of considering uncommon etiologies in intraoperative arrhythmias.
