The ribosome-lamellar complex; is it a normal structure?

T B Bull, A C McCartney

    Ultrastructural Pathology

    Summary

Ribosome-lamellar complexes, once thought to indicate malignancy, are now found in various cell types. Their diagnostic value for cancer needs reevaluation, as they appear in non-cancerous conditions too.

    Area of Science:

    • Cell biology
    • Pathology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Ribosome-lamellar complexes (RLCs) were historically considered a hallmark of hematopoietic malignancy.
    • Their presence has been increasingly reported in diverse cellular contexts.

    Observation:

    • RLCs were identified in mast cells of the iris in a patient with Usher's syndrome.
    • These complexes were also observed in neoplastic cells of an alveolar soft part sarcoma.

    Findings:

    • The study observed RLCs in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic cells.
    • This challenges the established association of RLCs solely with malignancy.

    Implications:

    • The diagnostic utility of RLCs in identifying cancer requires critical reassessment.
    • The concept linking RLCs exclusively to malignancy should be reconsidered based on these findings.
