Papillary Dermis

3.0K
Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Lentigines distribution can indicate underlying genetic or acquired conditions.
  • Understanding variations in lentigines presentation is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A unique case of lentigines exclusively on the palms and soles was observed in a healthy individual.
  • The patient had no significant personal or familial medical history.
  • Clinical examination and comprehensive genetic testing (whole-genome sequencing) revealed no abnormalities.

Findings:

  • The isolated palmoplantar distribution of lentigines was determined to be benign.
  • The presentation is consistent with lentigo simplex, but with an unprecedented distribution pattern.
  • No similar cases of palmoplantar-limited lentigines have been previously documented.

Implications:

  • This case broadens the known spectrum of lentigines presentations.
  • It highlights the importance of considering unusual distributions even in the absence of other symptoms.
  • Further research may explore genetic factors influencing localized lentigines patterns.
