Observation:

  • A 34-year-old male with non-transfusion-dependent SCD presented with a chronic left ankle ulcer.
  • The patient's ulcer was refractory to conventional treatments.

Findings:

  • Successful management of the chronic SCLU was achieved using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
  • Complete resolution of the ulcer was observed following HBOT.

Implications:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy presents a promising therapeutic option for recalcitrant sickle cell leg ulcers.
  • This case highlights the potential of HBOT in managing severe SCD complications.
  • Further research into HBOT for SCLUs is warranted to establish its efficacy and role in treatment guidelines.
