Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

474
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

176
Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Antidepressant Drugs: MAOIs and Other Agents

277
Atypical antidepressants, including bupropion (Wellbutrin), mirtazapine (Remeron), nefazodone (Serzone), trazodone (Desyrel), and vilazodone (Viibryd), offer unique mechanisms of action. Bupropion weakly inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake, aiding depression treatment and smoking cessation, with a low risk of sexual dysfunction. Mirtazapine enhances serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmission, leading to sedation, increased appetite, and weight gain. As a result, it helps treat...

G-protein Coupled Receptors01:21

G-protein Coupled Receptors

120.3K
G-protein coupled receptors are ligand binding receptors that indirectly affect changes in the cell. The actual receptor is a single polypeptide that transverses the cell membrane seven times creating intracellular and extracellular loops. The extracellular loops create a ligand specific pocket which binds to neurotransmitters or hormones. The intracellular loops holds onto the G-protein.

Menopause01:28

Menopause

206
Menopause, a natural biological process marking the end of a woman's fertility, typically occurs between the fifth and sixth decade of life. This phase is characterized by the exhaustion of the ovarian follicle pool, leading to less responsive ovaries despite the high levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). The consequential decrease in estrogen production results in symptoms like hot flashes, heavy sweating, headaches, hair loss, muscle pains, vaginal...

Depression: Overview01:18

Depression: Overview

281
Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Summary

Sexual dysfunction (SD) affects over 60% of major depressive disorder (MDD) patients, with females experiencing higher rates. Female sex, age over 45, low income, sluggishness, and somatic symptoms are key risk factors for SD in MDD.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental health condition.
  • Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a common and often debilitating comorbidity in MDD patients.
  • Understanding the factors contributing to SD in MDD is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and severity of sexual dysfunction (SD) in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD).
  • To identify demographic and clinical factors associated with the occurrence and severity of SD in this patient population.
  • To specifically examine the influence of sex on the presentation of SD among individuals with MDD.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 273 MDD patients (174 female, 99 male) underwent sociodemographic and clinical assessments.
  • Standardized instruments including the ASEX, QIDS-SR16, GAD-7, and PHQ-15 were utilized.
  • Statistical analyses involved univariate analyses, t-tests, Chi-square tests, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • A high prevalence of SD (61.9%) was observed in the MDD cohort, with significantly higher rates in females (75.3%) compared to males (38.4%).
  • Female sex, age 45 years or older, low monthly income (≤750 USD), increased sluggishness, and somatic symptoms were identified as significant risk factors for SD.
  • Female patients exhibited more severe SD (ASEX score 21.1±5.4) than male patients (ASEX score 17.1±4.6).

Conclusions:

  • Significant sex-based differences exist in the prevalence and severity of SD among patients with MDD.
  • Key risk factors for SD in MDD include female sex, older age, lower income, sluggishness, and somatic symptom burden.
  • These findings highlight the need for targeted screening and management of SD in specific subgroups of MDD patients.
