    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pharmacology
    • Urology

    Background:

    • Gonorrhea remains a significant public health concern globally.
    • Effective and safe treatment options for uncomplicated gonorrhea are crucial.
    • Emerging antibiotic resistance necessitates the evaluation of new therapeutic agents.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of mezlocillin in treating uncomplicated gonorrhea.
    • To determine the cure rate of a single intravenous dose of mezlocillin.
    • To assess the incidence of post-gonococcal urethritis following mezlocillin treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • A pilot study involving 50 patients with uncomplicated, untreated gonorrhea.
    • Participants received a single 2g intravenous injection of mezlocillin.
    • Patients were monitored for up to 101 days, with clinical and bacteriological assessments.

    Main Results:

    • A high cure rate of 97.8% was observed among the 46 patients who completed the follow-up.
    • Only 1 out of 46 patients failed to respond to the mezlocillin treatment.
    • Post-gonococcal urethritis developed in 10.8% of male patients observed at 3 weeks or later.

    Conclusions:

    • A single 2g intravenous dose of mezlocillin demonstrates high efficacy in treating uncomplicated gonorrhea.
    • Mezlocillin is a promising therapeutic option for gonorrhea, warranting further investigation.
    • The incidence of post-gonococcal urethritis requires consideration in treatment protocols.
