Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of teaching deliberate reflection to medical students.
  • To determine if the use of deliberate reflection is influenced by perceived case difficulty.

Main Methods:

  • 119 medical students were assigned to either a deliberate reflection group or a control group.
  • Participants solved diagnostic cases, with reflection measured by recall of discriminating features.
  • Case difficulty was manipulated by informing participants about upcoming challenging cases.

Main Results:

  • The deliberate reflection group recalled more features for the alternative diagnosis compared to the control group (p=0.013).
  • Students in the deliberate reflection group recalled more features related to their provided diagnosis for the initial cases (p=0.004).
  • No significant difference in feature recall related to the provided diagnosis was observed for the more difficult cases.

Conclusions:

  • Learning deliberate reflection enhances students' reflective reasoning in subsequent case solving.
  • The study suggests that deliberate reflection training can improve diagnostic processes in medical education.
