Summary

This randomized trial found no conclusive evidence that clindamycin prevents dental implant failure or complications. Preoperative clindamycin did not significantly reduce early implant loss or post-surgical infections in healthy adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a single preoperative dose of oral clindamycin in preventing early dental implant failure and post-surgical complications.
  • To assess the safety profile of clindamycin in this context.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving healthy adults undergoing conventional dental implant surgery.
  • Participants received either 600 mg oral clindamycin or a placebo one hour before the procedure.
  • Outcomes including implant failure, post-surgical infections, and adverse events were monitored and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Two implant failures occurred in the clindamycin group (n=31), compared to none in the placebo group (n=31).
