Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pulmonology
  • Biomarker Discovery

Background:

  • Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening significantly reduces lung cancer mortality.
  • However, LDCT screening faces challenges including low detection rates and high false positive rates.
  • There is a critical need for accurate, minimally invasive adjunctive tools to improve lung cancer screening efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review promising novel biomarkers for lung cancer screening.
  • To evaluate minimally invasive tests that can complement LDCT screening.
  • To highlight advancements in plasma, sputum, and airway-based diagnostic markers.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of recent studies on novel lung cancer biomarkers.
  • Analysis of minimally invasive testing modalities.
  • Focus on biomarkers derived from plasma, sputum, and airway samples.

Main Results:

  • Several novel biomarkers in plasma, sputum, and airway samples show promise for improving lung cancer detection.
  • These markers offer potential for higher validity and easier application compared to current screening limitations.
  • The reviewed markers represent advancements in adjunctive tools for lung cancer screening.

Conclusions:

  • Novel biomarkers from easily accessible biological samples are crucial for enhancing lung cancer screening.
  • These adjunctive tools have the potential to improve detection rates and reduce false positives in LDCT screening.
  • Further validation and integration of these markers could significantly impact lung cancer mortality reduction efforts.
