This study introduces EpiMix, a new Bayesian method for estimating the time-varying reproduction number (R_t) of infectious diseases. EpiMix efficiently provides reliable R_t estimates, even in low-incidence settings, by incorporating external factors.
Area of Science:
- Epidemiology
- Biostatistics
- Mathematical Modeling
Background:
- The time-varying reproduction number (R_t) is crucial for tracking disease transmission dynamics.
- Accurate estimation of R_t is essential for epidemic control and public health interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a novel, efficient method (EpiMix) for estimating the time-varying reproduction number (R_t).
- To incorporate exogenous factors and random effects into R_t estimation within a Bayesian framework.
Main Methods:
- Proposed EpiMix, a Bayesian regression framework for R_t estimation.
- Utilized Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) for efficient and deterministic R_t estimates.
- Incorporated exogenous variables and random effects to model disease transmission.
Main Results:
- EpiMix demonstrated robustness in simulations and case studies, particularly in low-incidence scenarios.
- The method showed flexibility in variable selection and tolerance for varying reporting rates.
- Achieved efficient and reliable, deterministic R_t estimates.
Conclusions:
- EpiMix is a valuable tool for real-time R_t estimation when serial interval distribution, case counts, and influencing factors are available.
- The method offers a flexible and robust approach to understanding epidemic spread.
- EpiMix enhances the ability to monitor and control infectious disease outbreaks.
