Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

390
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Psychological Assessment
  • Clinical Psychology Training

Background:

  • The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and Rorschach are widely used psychological assessment tools.
  • Training in these instruments is crucial for clinical psychology doctoral programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To update and compare the training of newer versions of the MMPI and Rorschach in clinical psychology doctoral programs.
  • To assess the adoption rates of MMPI-2-RF, MMPI-3, and R-PAS compared to older versions.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of American Psychological Association accredited clinical psychology doctoral programs was conducted in 2015, 2021, and 2022.
  • Sample sizes were 83 (2015), 81 (2021), and 88 (2022).
  • Data focused on the versions of MMPI and Rorschach taught in these programs.

Main Results:

  • MMPI training shows a shift towards MMPI-2-RF and MMPI-3, with adoption rates increasing from 2015 to 2022.
  • Rorschach training indicates a growing use of R-PAS, though the Comprehensive System (CS) remains in significant use.
  • Despite increasing adoption, many programs continue to teach older versions of both instruments.

Conclusions:

  • Clinical psychology doctoral programs are transitioning to newer MMPI and Rorschach versions, but at a slower pace than anticipated.
  • There is a need for improved guidance from the American Psychological Association (APA) on test version selection for training, practice, and research.
