Responses to Heat and Cold Stress02:45

Responses to Heat and Cold Stress

13.6K
Every organism has an optimum temperature range within which healthy growth and physiological functioning can occur. At the ends of this range, there will be a minimum and maximum temperature that interrupt biological processes.

Responses to Salt Stress

Salt stress—which can be triggered by high salt concentrations in a plant’s environment—can significantly affect plant growth and crop production by influencing photosynthesis and the absorption of water and nutrients.

The Collision Theory
Atoms, molecules, or ions must collide before they can react with each other. Atoms must be close together to form chemical bonds. This premise is the basis for a theory that explains many observations regarding chemical kinetics, including factors affecting reaction rates.
The collision theory is based on the postulates that (i) the reaction rate is proportional to the rate of reactant collisions, (ii) the reacting species collide in an orientation allowing contact between...

Effects of Temperature on Free Energy

25.7K
The spontaneity of a process depends upon the temperature of the system. Phase transitions, for example, will proceed spontaneously in one direction or the other depending upon the temperature of the substance in question. Likewise, some chemical reactions can also exhibit temperature-dependent spontaneities. To illustrate this concept, the equation relating free energy change to the enthalpy and entropy changes for the process is considered:

The Calvin Benson Cycle

Ribulose 1,5- bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCo) is a critical enzyme that catalyzes carbon dioxide assimilation during photosynthesis. However, it is an inefficient enzyme, having an extremely slow catalytic rate. A typical enzyme can process about a thousand molecules per second; however, RuBisCo fixes only around three-carbon dioxides per second. Photosynthetic cells compensate for this slow rate by synthesizing very high amounts of RuBisCo, making it the most abundant single...

Summary

High nighttime temperatures (HNT) more severely impact rice yield and quality than high daytime temperatures (HDT). Seed set rate is most sensitive, leading to significant yield losses and affecting grain quality under heat stress.

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Science
  • Plant Physiology
  • Climate Change Impact

Background:

  • Rising global temperatures and heat stress present significant challenges to rice production.
  • Understanding the complex relationship between temperature and rice yield/quality is crucial for food security.

Conclusions:

  • HNT poses a greater threat to rice production than HDT.
  • Seed set rate is a critical factor for yield loss under heat stress.
