Insights
Community-engaged research (CER) using the Life's Essential 8 (LE8) framework can improve cardiovascular health (CVH) and reduce cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) in racial/ethnic groups. Strategies include technology, group activities, and policy changes for health equity.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Cardiology
- Health Equity
Background:
- Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) are a primary cause of mortality in the U.S.
- Historically marginalized racial/ethnic groups experience a disproportionate burden of CMDs.
- The American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) framework promotes cardiovascular health (CVH).
Purpose of the Study:
- To review community-engaged research (CER) studies applying the LE8 framework.
- To examine CER's role in improving CVH among racial/ethnic groups.
- To identify effective strategies for integrating LE8 metrics within CER.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review of contemporary CER studies.
- Synthesis of research focusing on LE8 factors within racial/ethnic populations.
- Analysis of strategies employed in successful CER interventions.
Main Results:
- Limited studies currently integrate CER and the LE8 framework.
- CER application to LE8 metrics shows potential for improving CVH and reducing CMDs.
- Effective strategies include technology integration, group activities, cultural practices, social support, and structural changes.
Conclusions:
- CER is crucial for enhancing CVH and addressing CMD disparities in racial/ethnic groups.
- Future research should prioritize scalability and health policy interventions.
- Advancing health equity requires robust CER approaches to LE8 implementation.
Purpose Of Review:
Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) are leading causes of death and disproportionally impact historically marginalized racial/ethnic groups in the United States. The American Heart Association developed the Life's Essential 8 (LE8) to promote optimal cardiovascular health (CVH) through eight health behaviors and health factors. The purpose of this review is to summarize contemporary community-engaged research (CER) studies incorporating the LE8 framework among racial/ethnic groups.
Review Of Findings:
Limited studies focused on the interface of CER and LE8. Based on synthesis of articles in this review, the application of CER to individual/collective LE8 metrics may improve CVH and reduce CMDs at the population level. Effective strategies include integration of technology, group activities, cultural/faith-based practices, social support, and structural/environmental changes. CER studies addressing LE8 factors in racial/ethnic groups play an essential role in improving CVH. Future studies should focus on broader scalability and health policy interventions to advance health equity.
