  • Thirty healthy young volunteers participated in the study.
  • Participants performed quiet standing on a narrow block under three conditions: no cognitive task (NB), easy cognitive task (NBE), and difficult cognitive task (NBD).
  • The Uncontrolled Manifold (UCM) framework was used to decompose joint variance into components affecting center of mass (CoM) stability (VUCM) and variability (VORT).

Main Results:

  • Center of mass anterior-posterior (CoMAP) sway was significantly higher in the NB condition compared to NBE and NBD conditions.
  • Variability of CoM (VORT) was significantly higher in the NB condition than in NBE and NBD conditions.
  • Postural synergies, measured by the synergy index, increased under dual-task conditions (NBE and NBD) compared to the NB condition.

Conclusions:

  • Cognitive tasks enhance postural control by increasing the stability of postural synergies.
  • Engaging in cognitive tasks while standing reduces postural sway and variability.
  • The UCM framework effectively differentiates the effects of cognitive load on postural control strategies.
