Cancer Vaccines01:30

Cancer Vaccines

419
Cancer treatment vaccines are a rapidly evolving field that offers a promising approach to immunotherapy. Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent diseases, cancer treatment vaccines are designed to treat existing cancers by stimulating the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
Cancer vaccines come in two categories: preventive (prophylactic) and treatment (active). Preventive vaccines, such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, protect against viruses that cause certain...

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

12.7K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

What is Cancer?02:12

What is Cancer?

10.8K
Cells and tissues must meticulously coordinate their activities for the normal functioning of the human body. Therefore, they exhibit socially responsible behavior - resting, growing, dividing, differentiating, or dying - for the organism’s benefit. Cancer arises when cells divide uncontrollably and invade other tissues or organs.
Although people have known about cancer for centuries, it was only in 1761 that Giovanni Morgagni of Padua performed a detailed autopsy of...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

394
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

1.6K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

66
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Health Education
  • Cancer Prevention

Background:

  • Cervical cancer (CC), colorectal cancer (CRC), and breast cancer (BC) are preventable/detectable through early screening.
  • Underserved populations, including low-income, low-educated, and uninsured minorities, often face barriers to recommended cancer screenings and timely follow-up.
  • A community-based educational program was developed to address knowledge gaps in a South Texas underserved population regarding CC, CRC, and BC screening.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally and linguistically tailored community-based educational program.
  • To improve knowledge and awareness of cervical, colorectal, and breast cancer screening in an underserved population.
  • To promote positive changes in attitudes and intentions towards cancer screening.

Main Methods:

  • A live, web-based educational presentation was delivered by bilingual health educators to residents of Laredo, Texas.
  • Participants (n=237 for CC, n=59 for CRC, n=56 for BC) completed online pre- and post-education surveys.
  • McNemar's chi-squared tests were used to compare pre-post changes in knowledge for individual items.

Main Results:

  • Participants demonstrated statistically significant increases in knowledge and awareness for CC, CRC, and BC screening (P < 0.05).
  • Post-education, 85-97% of participants intended to discuss screening with a healthcare provider.
  • Following the program, 88-97% intended to undergo screening within 12 months or at their next appointment, and 90-97% intended to discuss cancer screening with family and friends.

Conclusions:

  • Culturally and linguistically tailored community-based educational programs are effective in increasing cancer screening knowledge and awareness.
  • The program successfully promoted positive changes in participants' knowledge and intentions regarding cancer screening benefits.
  • Further educational initiatives in similar underserved populations are recommended to reduce the incidence of cervical, colorectal, and breast cancer.
