    Minor head trauma in young adults can alter hearing, causing higher auditory thresholds and earlier Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) wave I. These bilateral changes suggest central nervous system effects on cochlear function.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate auditory function changes in individuals with recent minor head trauma.
    • To assess auditory thresholds and Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) in trauma patients compared to controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Tonal auditory thresholds at 500, 2000, and 4000 Hz were measured.
    • BAER recordings were performed using unfiltered 125 dB SPL clicks.
    • Forty young adults (18-23 years) participated: 20 with recent minor head trauma and 20 matched controls.

    Main Results:

    • Trauma patients exhibited significantly higher auditory thresholds (19 dB SPL at 500 Hz, 9 dB SPL at 2000/4000 Hz) bilaterally.
    • Head trauma patients showed significantly earlier BAER wave I latencies bilaterally.
    • No significant differences were observed in later BAER waves or intervals between groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Recent minor head trauma can cause bilateral auditory alterations, including reduced sensitivity to low frequencies and hypersensitivity to high intensities.
    • The observed changes, particularly the earlier BAER wave I and elevated auditory thresholds, suggest trauma impacts the central nervous system's efferent pathways to the cochlea.
