Background:

Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) is a widely adopted communication framework in clinical and nursing education.
Structured communication programs enhance inter-professional collaboration, positivity, and satisfaction among nursing students.
Evidence on the effectiveness of SBAR-based simulation training for nursing students requires synthesis.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically review and synthesize existing evidence on the effectiveness of SBAR-based simulation training for nursing students.
To identify the impact of SBAR training on communication clarity and critical thinking skills.
To evaluate the influence of SBAR simulation on nursing students' attitudes toward patient safety.

Main Methods:

A systematic review protocol was developed adhering to PRISMA guidelines and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021234068).
Searches were conducted across eight databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, DBpia, RiSS, KISS, KISTI) for studies published between 2001 and 2021.
Data extraction, critical appraisal using the EPHPP Quality Assessment Tool, and narrative synthesis using the framework approach were employed.

Main Results:

Twelve studies (3 RCTs, 9 quasi-experimental) were included in the review.
Six of the 12 studies demonstrated significant improvements in communication clarity favoring SBAR-based simulation.
While communication clarity showed positive results, findings on communication ability, critical thinking, confidence, self-efficacy, and patient safety attitudes were divergent.

Conclusions:

SBAR-based nursing simulation programs yield positive learning outcomes, primarily through enhanced clear and concise communication.
Improved communication clarity positively influences nursing students' patient safety behaviors.
Further research is recommended to explore the effectiveness of SBAR-based programs on a wider range of learning outcomes.
