Summary

Augmented reality (AR) integrated with 3D dynamic navigation systems (3D-DNS) significantly improved accuracy and efficiency for osteotomy and root-end resection (RER). This AR + 3D-DNS approach shows potential for endodontic microsurgery.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontic Microsurgery
  • Surgical Navigation Technologies
  • Augmented Reality Applications

Background:

  • Augmented reality (AR) enhances perception by overlaying virtual content onto the real environment.
  • 3D dynamic navigation systems (3D-DNS) are used for surgical guidance.
  • This study evaluates AR integration with 3D-DNS for osteotomy and root-end resection (RER).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of integrating an AR head-mounted device with a 3D-DNS.
  • To compare the accuracy and efficiency of AR-assisted 3D-DNS versus traditional 3D-DNS for osteotomy and RER.
  • To evaluate the potential of AR in endodontic microsurgery.

Main Methods:

  • 72 tooth roots from 3D-printed surgical jaw models were used.
  • Two groups were formed: AR + 3D-DNS (n=36) and 3D-DNS (n=36).
  • Osteotomy and RER were virtually planned and guided, with AR (Microsoft HoloLens 2) integrated into one group's 3D-DNS.

Main Results:

  • Both AR + 3D-DNS and 3D-DNS successfully completed osteotomy and RER in all samples.
  • The AR + 3D-DNS group demonstrated significantly higher accuracy with lower 2D and 3D deviations.
  • The AR + 3D-DNS group was also significantly more time-efficient, with no significant difference in procedural mishaps.

Conclusions:

  • Integration of AR head-mounted devices with 3D-DNS is feasible for osteotomy and RER.
  • AR significantly enhances the accuracy and time efficiency of 3D-DNS in these procedures.
  • Head-mounted AR shows promise for safe and reliable integration into 3D-DNS for endodontic microsurgery.
