Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

66
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Microorganisms in Medicine and Therapeutics

62
Microorganisms play a fundamental role in vaccine development, gene therapy, and therapeutic production. Their biological properties are harnessed to advance medicine and public health. Beyond immunization, microorganisms contribute to gut health, antibiotic synthesis, and genetic disease treatment.Live Attenuated and Inactivated VaccinesLive attenuated vaccines, such as the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, utilize weakened forms of pathogens to closely resemble natural infections.

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

12.0K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Health Literacy01:21

Health Literacy

4.1K
Health literacy is an individual's or a community's capacity to comprehend, receive, read, and use relevant healthcare information and services. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative...

Social Proof

27.7K
Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Summary

Primary care pediatricians used social media and digital reminders to combat parental vaccine hesitancy for children's COVID-19 shots. These interventions significantly increased COVID-19 vaccine uptake in children aged 5-11 years.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Public Health
  • Vaccinology
  • Health Communication

Background:

  • Parental vaccine hesitancy poses a significant challenge to achieving high COVID-19 vaccination coverage in children.
  • Primary care pediatricians (PCPs) are crucial in addressing parental concerns and promoting vaccine uptake.
  • The Italian National Health Service (NHS) included children aged 5-11 years in its COVID-19 vaccination campaign starting December 2021.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a PCP-led social media intervention combined with a digital reminder service (DRS) on parental hesitancy.
  • To assess the effectiveness of these digital strategies in increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates among children aged 5-11 years.
  • To compare vaccination coverage between children whose parents received the intervention and those who did not.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective cohort study involving parents and caretakers of children aged 5-11 years.
  • Two cohorts of PCPs were recruited: one group received a social media intervention and DRS, while the other did not.
  • Vaccination coverage rates were compared between the exposed (intervention) and non-exposed (control) groups, with both having access to traditional counseling.

Main Results:

  • The exposed cohort (n=277) showed higher full immunization rates (59.5%) compared to the non-exposed cohort (n=323) (45.5%).
  • A significantly lower percentage of children remained unvaccinated in the exposed group (32.5%) versus the non-exposed group (47%).
  • The difference in vaccination coverage between the two groups was statistically significant (chi square = 11.5016; p = 0.0006).

Conclusions:

  • PCP-led social media interventions and DRS positively impacted COVID-19 vaccine uptake in children aged 5-11 years.
  • These digital communication strategies appear effective in mitigating parental vaccine hesitancy.
  • Further research with robust study designs is recommended to confirm these findings and inform future public health initiatives.
