  • Comparison of patients with panic disorder/simple panic to controls regarding psychological distress and symptom interpretation.
  • Main Results:

    • 13% of patients met DSM-III criteria for panic disorder (6.7% with exclusionary criteria).
    • An additional 8.7% experienced 'simple panic' with panic symptoms but not full criteria.
    • Patients with panic disorder or simple panic showed higher rates of major depression, phobias, avoidance behavior, and psychological distress.
    • Misinterpretation of symptoms as physical illness was common in panic disorder patients.
    • Panic disorder patients had higher somatization scores and medical symptom review results compared to controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Panic disorder is prevalent in primary care, often presenting with somatic complaints.
    • Accurate diagnosis and treatment of panic disorder can alleviate psychological distress and reduce somatic preoccupation.
    • Primary care physicians can play a vital role in identifying and managing panic disorder through screening.
