Summary
This study shows that wide surgical resection of soft tissue sarcomas in the shoulder area can achieve excellent oncological and functional outcomes. Limb-sparing surgery preserved shoulder function, with no local recurrences observed in the patient cohort.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic oncology
- Surgical oncology
- Musculoskeletal oncology
Context:
- Soft tissue sarcomas require surgical resection for curative therapy.
- Limb-sparing surgery is preferred to preserve function.
- Wide resection with negative margins (R0) is the goal for sarcoma removal.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the oncological and functional outcomes of wide resection for soft tissue sarcomas involving the shoulder girdle.
- To assess the efficacy of a specific surgical technique for limb-sparing sarcoma resection in this region.
Summary:
- A consecutive series of 6 patients (4 primary sarcomas, 2 metastases) underwent wide resection using an extended deltopectoral approach.
- 100% R0 resection was achieved, with a mean follow-up of 22.5 months and no local recurrences.
- Patients demonstrated good functional recovery, with mean active shoulder abduction of 135°, no neurological deficits, and high subjective function and MSTS scores.
Impact:
- This surgical approach offers a viable limb-sparing option for shoulder girdle soft tissue sarcomas.
- It achieves excellent oncological control while maintaining significant shoulder function.
- The technique contributes to improved quality of life for sarcoma patients.
