Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine how sleep architecture and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) impact cognitive function within the Sleep and Dementia Consortium.
  • To identify specific sleep metrics associated with cognitive decline or preservation.

Main Methods:

  • Data from five US population-based cohorts were analyzed, including overnight home-based polysomnography (PSG) and neuropsychological assessments over five years.
  • Sleep metrics were standardized, and analyses were pooled using random-effects meta-analyses, adjusting for relevant covariates.
  • Included 5946 participants without prior stroke or dementia, with data analyzed between March 2020 and June 2023.

Main Results:

  • Higher sleep maintenance efficiency and reduced time awake after sleep onset were associated with better global cognitive scores.
