Background:

COVID-19 restrictions in March 2020 necessitated remote clinical assessments.
A dental hygiene program implemented a virtual Objective Structured Clinical Exam (vOSCE) via Zoom.
The vOSCE aimed to evaluate student competency in conducting health histories.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore student and clinical instructor perceptions of the virtual Objective Structured Clinical Exam (vOSCE).
To assess the effectiveness and user experience of vOSCEs for health history evaluation in dental hygiene.
To identify potential challenges and benefits of virtual clinical examinations.

Main Methods:

A 2-part cross-sectional study involving dental hygiene students and clinical instructors.
Online questionnaires were administered to 42 students (23 responses).
Focus groups were conducted with 12 clinical instructors, with data analyzed thematically.

Main Results:

91% of students supported the vOSCE, finding it effective for assessing knowledge, health history skills, and communication.
87% of students agreed the Zoom platform facilitated the examination.
Instructor feedback identified themes of preparation, assessment suitability, authenticity, and future considerations for vOSCEs.

Conclusions:

Virtual Objective Structured Clinical Exams (vOSCEs) are a viable alternative for health history evaluations in dental hygiene.
The study suggests increased potential for virtual platforms in conducting various clinical evaluations.
Findings support the integration of technology for remote clinical competency assessments in health professions.
