Summary

This study developed 55 consensus-based statements for assessing podiatry students during Work Integrated Learning (WIL). This is a crucial first step toward a standardized clinical assessment tool for podiatry programs in Australia and New Zealand.

Background:

Podiatry student training in Australia and New Zealand involves simulated and real clinical settings, including Work Integrated Learning (WIL).
Clinical performance during WIL is currently assessed using varied tools by Clinical Educators.
A standardized assessment tool is needed to ensure consistency and threshold clinical competency for podiatry graduates.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop consensus-based statements for assessing podiatry students during WIL.
To lay the groundwork for creating standardized guidelines for podiatry WIL assessment.

Main Methods:

A three-round modified Delphi consensus method was employed.
A diverse panel of 25 stakeholders, including educators, Clinical Educators, students, graduates, and consumers, was convened.
Open-ended and agreement-based questions were used to gather expert opinions on essential assessment elements and methods.

Main Results:

A panel of 25 stakeholders participated, with 21 completing Round 1, 18 Round 2, and 17 Round 3.
The panel comprised podiatry educators, Clinical Educators, student representatives, new graduates, and consumers.
Fifty-five statements reached consensus regarding the assessment of podiatry students during WIL.

Conclusions:

This Delphi study represents the first consensus-based statements for assessing Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in podiatry.
Fifty-five key statements pertinent to WIL assessment in podiatry were identified.
These statements are a foundational step towards developing a consistent assessment tool for entry-level podiatry programs across Australia and New Zealand.
