Background:

Sequential models involve two-stage treatment approaches for improved outcomes.
Eating disorders (EDs) are a potential population benefiting from sequential treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the emerging literature on sequential treatment applications in eating disorders.
To identify trends and limitations in current research.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature search of Pubmed and PsycINFO using PRISMA guidelines.
Inclusion of studies on temporally sequential treatments for EDs from inception to April 2022.
Exclusion of combined or integrated treatment approaches.

Main Results:

12 studies were reviewed, focusing on Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), and mixed ED samples.
No studies specifically on Anorexia Nervosa (AN) were identified.
Most studies utilized Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, targeted BED patients, and were conducted in outpatient, group settings.

Conclusions:

Data on sequential treatments for EDs is scarce and has methodological limitations.
Further development of sequential treatment definitions is needed for robust clinical research.
Empirical support for sequential treatments in complex ED cases and non-optimal responses requires enhancement.
