Summary

A new algorithm-based active cleansing (ABAC) protocol significantly reduced on-site bowel preparation time for colonoscopy. This method also decreased nursing staff workload, making colonoscopy preparation more efficient.

  • An open-label, multicenter, prospective comparative study.
  • Patients received 2000 mL of polyethylene glycol (PEG) within 2 hours.
  • ABAC group patients self-administered additional PEG based on defecation frequency.

  • Propensity score matching included 174 patients per group.
  • The ABAC group showed significantly shorter preparation time (126.3 min vs. 144.9 min, P=0.018).
  • Increased additional PEG intake and defecation frequency were observed in the ABAC group.

Conclusions:

  • The ABAC protocol effectively reduces on-site bowel preparation time.
  • This active instruction protocol also decreases nursing staff labor for colonoscopy.
